For the many children Polk County whose families are at poverty level, their main source of nutrition is the subsidized breakfasts and lunches they receive at school during the week. But what happens on the weekends? Unfortunately, many go hungry.
FPC has been involved for many years with a program at Alta Vista Elementary School (Alta Vista is a high poverty school and last year they had over 25 children homeless.) where we have supplied a simple bag of food that gets distributed to needy children, that can be included in their back-packs on Friday to help them get through the weekend.
"Snacks for Packs" is a very special way that you can help us help a child—by providing food items to feed a child over a weekend. FPC has agreed to provide bags to feed 20 children each weekend throughout the entire school year. Items must be individually wrapped and cannot contain high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweetener, or artificial coloring. These snack items are chosen because they are nutritious, non-perishable, pre-packaged, pre-cooked, can be eaten hot or cold, and that children WANT to eat.
There are three ways to help our Mission Team with this ongoing ministry. You can purchase items needed to fill the bags; you can volunteer to help fill the bags with provided donations; or you can provide monetary support that will go towards the purchase of these items. [If you opt for the latter, please make checks payable to FPC and please indicate Alta Vista Food Ministry in the memo field.]
